The Beginning of the Gardens
In rural Leavenworth County, construction of the house began in early spring 1978, and was ready to move into by early spring 1979. The five acre site was half native timber and half abandoned marginal crop ground, there were no trees, no grass or any other plants, except weeds on the building site. As the above picture shows, the house looked like it was perched on the planet Mars. The soil on the site was heavy clay, most of the top soil washed away over the years by over farming.
